All About Her

The ancient Greeks had a term for it, entheos, the indwelling spirit of the gods, Adell Shay embodied it.

Many were touched deeply by a single facet of her spirit, this site is an attempt share some of her more brilliant aspects.
Adell was a modern renaissance woman, mentor, writer, painter, administrator, public speaker and educator. She was accomplished and celebrated in the third dimension.

However, it was in the fourth dimension that she really blossomed, uninhibited by her physical challenges. The most compelling aspect of her character was Adell’s thirst for union with the Divine.

Her greatest joy, no matter the vicissitudes, was tirelessly sharing her scar tissue and transcendent experiences and insights with other women. Encouraging them to broaden and deepen their personal search for union through love and service to others.

The purpose of this website is to allow folks to see what happens when sobriety infuses a life. I will be refreshing the featured columns on the landing page once a month. I want this to be a space where, if you are missing the tall girl, you can come to this page finding laughter, conviction and fearless hope to accomplish things that seem beyond you.

You may have loved ones that never had any connection to Adell hence the recordings and columns so that people can be uplifted and embraced by her insightful spirit ad infinitum.

Lastly, it’s a way to inflict our love on others there will be a section on the Loving Sober practice and a bunch of sappy photos. Don’t be sad for me. I got the girl and I had her for 28 years and she loved me really, really well.

Adell always wanted to be my” playmate” running around the globe experiencing the fellowships. It was her desire but not her temperament nor true inclination.

I am the most fortunate male form you have ever met.  In the winter of 1993, I approached Adell Shay, asking her not to fallen love with anyone until she had a chance to get to know me,  I thought we could have a really good time together.

And did we ever.

I believe to the depth of my soul there is a simple way that couples can have this type experience. Start meditating together today.

The tall girl and I were smitten with each other in a fashion that is thrilling to experience and appalling to behold. We started meditating together before we started sleeping together and this radically informed our perception of each other and our relationship.

She was my perfect match and we had a grand life chasing the breeze of the spirit together.

Together we wrote, Loving Sober, A Field Guide to Spiritual Intimacy showing how our warts transformed into beauty marks.  The core of the teaching that came through us was always to be aware of what your partner did right today while being mindful of your own missteps. It makes each day a grand adventure.

The foundation of our love and our spiritual search was always the 12 Steps and commitment to being kind to the new person offering them what had been freely give to us.

Adell Shay will always be my muse, wanting more for me than I could dream of for myself.

In the last week of her life she looked deeply into my eyes and gave me a gift that crosses time and space, “I forgive you forever.”

This last year when practicing Vedic Meditation together twice a day, she would always say” I’ll see you on the other side!”

I am looking forward to it.

Raised in Akron

“Akron? You want me to go to Akron?”

I stared at my husband, Jay, mouth agape, not knowing whether to laugh or cry.

He had been leading up to this – first asking me to save the last weekend of September so he could take me away for a romantic trip, but refusing to tell me where.

“Wha-a-a-t?” Jay answered with a high-pitched tone, followed by a nervous laugh. He only uses that response when I’m about to launch. “I’ve always wanted to go there,” he continued.

“You could have chosen Maui, where we could bask in the tropics and you could swim in warm, clear water while I visited my sister, niece and nephew and mom,” I said. “You could have chosen Paris or Spain, but you chose Akron?”
